Parentfolk Weekender at Victoria Baths

Though it’s a more common sight around Liverpool or Chester, you may well have spotted a copy of Parentfolk – a publication for “folk doing parenting their own way” – hanging around Our Kid or a similarly stylish family spot.

They’re not just about print, though… We went along to their first weekender at Chester racecourse last summer, where we had a brill time eating pizza, shopping, playing and throwing out some of our best moves.

IMG_4223So we had high hopes for their first Manchester event, created in collaboration with Modern Little People, which took place at the weekend.

As Elliot’s dad was at the football, we were rolling with grandma this time (who continues to find the array and quality of events on offer to us modern parents mindboggling – sample quote: ‘When you were a baby, I only ever took you to the park or the health centre.’)

We arrived just after 12.30pm to see the place already thronging with giddy families, and we got firmly stuck in.

IMG_4232Elliot’s currently a temperamental toddler with a very short attention span, and he tends to only allow us a 45-60-minute window to enjoy these kinds of events before the sugar high wears off he insists we “go now” – we’ve had to slope off disconcertingly early from many a baby rave/family social for this very reason. But, thanks to the huge variety of things on offer here, and the shear amount of space there was to run round, he lasted a whole hour and a half. Score! He particularly loved the main dancefloor and all the toys and inflatable dotted round there, and the dedicated toddler play area complete with ride-on digger (the dream).

But what about us grown ups? Well, there’s something about being in a such a special venue and knowing that you’re dancing on top of a covered swimming pool that makes drinking a very strong cocktail at 2pm in the afternoon totally OK (ta, Love Thy Neighbour)… Unfortunately, we were too busy child-wrangling to take advantage of the Harvey Nichols pop up, but it looked like the mums and dads who did manage to indulge were having a right good time.

IMG_4229On the shopping front, it was pretty clear that all of the independent retailers hosting stalls had been carefully selected for their quality and uniqueness. After browsing (extensively), I bought Elliot the cutest slogan t-shirt from Bear Four, and a new bath toy from the Modern Little People pop-up.

I’d like to say a huge thanks to Charlotte Giddings Photography for capturing the wonderful snap I’ve used as the lead image here, which pretty much sums up what a fab time we all had and is now my favourite picture EVER.

Parentfolk have a number of other events coming up – see the Parentfolk Facebook page for more.
